O & L Farms History

The Lay family farm is a second generation farm.  The farm was started in 1963 when Art and Jan Lay, Owen’s parents moved from Golden Ridge to Bluebell.  Owen their only child, was 5 years old at the time.

In 1972 Art bought 9 cows, 8 calves and 1 heifer.  That was the beginning of the cattle on the farm.

Owen grew up helping his dad on the farm.  He graduated in 1976 and went to Fort McMurray to work for a few months.  He returned home knowing that farming was his passion.  He rented 9  quarters of land and started grain farming with the help of his father. 

On April 21^st , 1984 Owen and Val were married. Owen had purchased a quarter of land with a house on it which they renovated and made it their home.  Owen and his dad continued to expand their cattle herd along with grain farming.

In 1988 Art and Jane retired and moved to Meadow Lake.  That fall, Owen and Val moved to the farm where Owen grew up.  Val gave up her career in hairdressing to become a full time rancher/farmer.  They ran a cow/calf operation calving out just over 200 cows.  The farming operation also consisted of haying and feed grains. 

In 2001 O&L Farms was incorporated with Owen and Val as shareholders.  Over the years they continued with cow/calf, haying and feed grains. 

On Feb. 11/2011 Owen was diagnosed with cancer.  He lost his courageous battle on May 8/2011 on his farm.
